“Build a good name. Keep your name clean. Don’t make compromises, don’t worry about making a bunch of money or being successful — be concerned with doing good work and make the right choices and protect your work. And if you build a good name, eventually, that name will be its own currency.”— William S. Burroughs
So going through HS I was a big Jordan fiend basically 'cause my Dad was a sneaker-head and I had access to all the Jordan's before they released, but lately I been wanting to grow up my style to a more timeless look and leave Jordan's kind of alone. I been having troubles with it because I feel as though me getting compliments on my Jordan s was what made me and I'm scared to give it up. I'm not saying I'm totally giving up Jordan's but I want to shy away from always wearing them. HELP.
If you’re a big fan of Jordan’s I would say, stay true to yourself and keep them in your rotation. I was in the same boat as you my freshman and sophomore year of college. I had been wearing sneakers all my life but, during the time I was creating A Collected Gentleman, I wanted to change my style. So I just did my research and studied different blogs like Street Etiquette, The Style Blogger and Men’s Style Pro. They were all guys who made the transition from not just wearing sneakers, but also incorporating classic shoes like oxfords, wingtips and brogues into their wardrobe. There’s nothing wrong with having the best of both worlds. During the first year of this blog I didn’t style sneakers because I wanted something new and plus I had been wearing them for so long. But now I’m enjoying them more than ever. So keep your J’s but switch up and try something different.
Isaiah! Weirdly specific question: do you have any styling tips for us ladies who like to browse the men's section of thrift stores? The flannels are forever calling my name. Thanks!
I think you should definitely listen to that voice in your head and stock up on some flannels. They are perfect year round and can be a cool accessory (tied around your waist) this summer to give the rest of your look extra flavor. I would also look for boyfriend jeans or some jeans to rip up, if that’s your style. Also, any other favorite men’s-article of clothing you love to wear (sweaters, t-shirts and sneakers). Honestly, just experiment because you can’t beat the incredibly cheap prices so splurge and have fun. If you have any more questions feel free to ask .
Isaiah, I hope all is well with you! I just wanted to drop by to say that you are certainly the men's style icon of tumblr. Your outfits are as sharp as ever, and provide a wealth of ideas that I attempt to incorporate into my own look. Also, you are looking very trim as of late! How is the health kick going?
Topher, All is well my friend! I hope all is well on your side. Thank you for the kind words. I hope to be a men’s style icon one day, I still have so far to go and some much to learn. I’m just my happy my blog inspires people. But It means a lot to know my blog gives you ideas towards building your looks. The health kick is going great ! I’ve been at it for about 2 1/2 months now and since then I went from 258 to 232. I’ve enjoyed the journey toward better health.
