Your Voice, Vision and Knowledge Matters. Use them to Inspire, Motivate and Encourage Others. Eliminate the self-doubt you have floating in your mind. Love and appreciate yourself. Don’t be afraid to be who you are.
To be a great photographer you need to understand composition. You need to know how to take the elements of design in a three dimensional world, and translate that into two dimensional. Getting dressed is the same way. Silhouette, line, tactile and visual texture all blend together to form one great outfit. Many guys are good at photography, and many are good at getting dressed; but few are ever exceptional at both. Nobody understands how to do both like Isaiah Johnson of A Collected Gentleman.
WTW: Name and Occupation
ACG: Isaiah Johnson
Menswear/Lifestyle Blogger and Freelance Photographer
WTW: How does the city influence your personal style?
ACG: The culture and thrift/consignment stores in my city have had a huge influence towards my personal style. The thrift stores here allowed me to experiment and develop my style at an inexpensive price. The culture of my city gave me inspiration, from the stylish people walking downtown to the beautiful architecture around every corner
WTW: Who is your favorite artist? (e.g. painter, sculptor )
ACG: Frida Kahlo (Painter) and Richard Avedon (Photographer). I loved how Frida captured her emotions in her paintings, I also loved that she always included symbolism as well. Richard’s fashion and editorial work was simple breathtaking and a head of its time; it’s something I model my work after.
WTW: Favorite movie?
ACG: Man, this is a tough one. My favorite movie would have to be Don’t Be A Menace While Drinking Juice In South Central. I had to have watched it over a million times. I don’t think I will ever get tired of that movie.
WTW: Favorite museum?
ACG: The North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh is by far my favorite museum. I held my first exhibit there and I meet so many great people along the way. I owe a lot of my achievements and growth to them and their staff.
WTW: Favorite non-clothing store?
ACG: Either a Books A Million or Camera Store, both places bring me such peace and knowledge
WTW: What are the places someone must visit if they only have three days in your city?
ACG: They would have to visit, The North Carolina Museum of Art, Revolver Boutique Consignment and Art Space
WTW: On the weekends, what can we find you doing?
ACG: On the weekends, I’m preparing my blog posts for the following week and photographing clients.
WTW: On your blog, readers will not only find writing and photos related to clothing, but uplifting messages and rants. Why did you choose to include these on your site?
ACG: I wanted my blog to be just more than outfits and fashion. I wanted to develop a voice outside of that, so I started speaking my mind through my blog. We all go through stuff and have problems, but it’s amazing how powerful words can be, reading something inspirational can change your whole day and make you feel like you’re not alone. Those messages and rants are from the heart and I just say what’s on my mind and hope they inspire or uplift someone. And to be honest I write them for myself as well, because I have my bad days.
WTW: What led to your interest in photography? Did you start out knowing it was something you’d be great at, or did you just fall into it?
ACG: I actually needed a camera for my blog to take pictures of my outfits, but then I just started taking pictures of my surroundings and stuff. But having one of my photos selected to be in an museum exhibit really made me take it more seriously.
“But what love got to do with it when I don’t love myself
To the point I should hate everything I do love
Should I hate living my life inside the club
Should I hate her for watching me for that reason
Should I hate him for telling me that I’m season
Should I hate them for telling me ball out
Should I hate street credibility I’m talkin’ about
Hatin’ all money, power, respect in my will
I’m hatin’ the fact that none of that s**t make me real”—Kendrick Lamar
You gotta have patience and think good thoughts Your time is coming :) Focus on yourself, use other’s success as an inspiration. Don’t think you’re not good enough, because you are. Great things just take time and when you’re at the place in your life where you’ve dreamed of being, you’ll look back and realize everything you went through was worth it. The worst thing you can do is give up, you don’t know what’s around the corner. Never give up or surrender. Fight for your dreams and love yourself for who you are.
When it comes to your dreams, ambitions and goals, never be satisfied. Don’t settle, continue to strive for improvement and knowledge. We have one life to live with a million possibilties, why settle for just one thing ? Live your life and enjoy every minute of it. Don’t dwell on the past or stress about the future , just live.
