A Collected Interview:
Maricia Josephs of The Musing of Krav
ACG: Tell us about your blog, Musing of Krav and the inspiration behind creating it ?
MJ:Musings of Krav is a website I created to inspire myself and to inspire others. That was really my main goal. I wanted to do something for myself that could also help others. As a college freshman who at the time wanted to explore my future career for myself, Musings of Krav was my platform to do so. I also wanted to show people that age cannot stop you from following your dreams. Two and a half years later I have come so far in many ways and I can look at the website and visually see it. Others can too!
ACG: You’re from New York City, but you currently reside in Atlanta. Talk about life growing up in NYC and life now in Atlanta. Also for someone who’s never been to either place, explain the differences and similarities between both cities( Fashion, Food , Hospitality Etc)
MJ: I lived in NYC all my life until 2010 when I moved to Atlanta. Growing up In NYC was probably one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. It will affect you forever. You just learn so much just by living there. I was able to experience so much culture and people from different walks of life. Being a New Yorker gives you an edge in every way from how you go about success to your personal style. Atlanta is very different as far as culture goes, it’s not as much of a melting pot. It’s slow but it’s a beautiful state where you can learn a lot about African American culture. NYC is full of fashion, pizza slices, emotionless faces and self-expression while Atlanta is full of more reserved people, hearty soul-food and people who have a welcoming smile on their faces at all times. Both places are great in their own ways.
ACG: You have a series on your blog where you interview people titled “Conversation with Inspiration”. Out of the individuals you’ve interviewed, who would you say left you with the most insight and inspiration?
MJ: Dani Stahl, who is the style editor at large for NYLON magazine has for sure left me with the most insight. As a professional in a field I want to work in, she not only spoke about her ambitious journey but she showed me you can accomplish a world of things but remain humble. She is someone I wanted to interview for years and that moment was really full circle. She is full of positivity and light. I love her!
ACG: Tell us about your personal style. Where do you draw inspiration from?
MJ: My personal style is really polished and glamorous. I love menswear, I love jewel filled necklaces and I love oxford shoes. I guess you can say my style is ‘pretty’ with an edge. I draw inspiration from so many things and people, but J. Crew has a big influence on my style and outlook
ACG: Who is your style icon
MJ: Jenna Lyons is my style soul mate. She is able to look classic but intriguing all at once. The way she uses simple silhouettes and combines it with edgy style elements is amazing
ACG: What inspired you to become a journalist? Also, what advice would you have for up and coming journalists on the same career path as you.
MJ: Writing has always been something I loved to do. As I got older, I realized I couldn’t ever see myself not doing something that included that. So as I was thinking of careers, journalism was the perfect match for me. My biggest piece of advice would be get as much experience as you can. It’s important to do things on your own, whether it’s a website, YouTube pag or magazine. Interning is also very significant. You gain so much knowledge, contacts and useful lessons from internships.
ACG: Talk about your experiences working with Teen Diaries and College Fashionista ?
MJ: College Fashionista was a cool experience. It allowed me to sharpen my photography skills all while meeting new people. It also helped me become less shy. As for Teen Diaries, this past year has been an amazing journey. I’ve accomplished some great things and working with them allows me to be creative and really share my ideas. The company is very philanthropic and that is something I admire. It inspires girls who are/were just like me, so it’s amazing to be able to contribute to that and witness its effects.
ACG: Where did your love for photography and graphic design come from?
MJ: My love for each comes from my desire to show others how I see beauty. I can capture or design what I like.
ACG: Where do you see yourself in five years
MJ: I see myself successful with God’s grace. I know for sure I’ll be doing stuff that benefits others in some way. I really want to be in a position to help others. Aside from that, I see myself successful in the media field in some way.
ACG: What’s a typical day for Maricia?
MJ: As a student, a typical day for me for sure includes studying or class. It also includes brainstorming ideas for my articles or designs. I’m always thinking about my next step.
ACG: What inspires you?
MJ: Love is what inspires me the most. Not simply romantic love but love in general. Love is very broad. It’s the root of everything I do and I think it breeds greatness.
ACG: Finish this sentence. Life is …
MJ: beautiful and what you make it!
